My Love Affair with Red Raspberries
September 23, 2009  |  by Angela Jia Kim  |  All Posts  |  , , , , , , ,

I love berries… blueberries, blackberries, and raspberries. In this blog post, I focus in on why I am officially obsessed with the Red Raspberry.

With its vibrant red color and melt-in-your-mouth texture, it’s hard not to adore Red Raspberries. The slightly-tart taste mixed with a bit of natural sweetness makes this a perfect fruit to savor on a hot summer’s day. On top of it all, it’s packed with anti-oxidants for both skin care and health benefits. What’s not to love about the Red Raspberry?

Angela’s Organic Antioxidant Smoothie Recipe:
  • Organic Red Raspberries
  • Organic Blueberries
  • Organic Banana (1 or 2)
  • Organic Fruits of choice
  • Organic Orange Juice
    1. Freeze the fruit (freezing will not lower the nutritional value)

    2. Put about 1 – 2 cups of the fruits into a Kitchen Aid blender.

    3. Add enough orange juice to cover the fruit and blend until you get a nice smoothie texture.

“Red Raspberries actually have an exclusive secret weapon called ellagitannins, a family of compounds that have anti-cancer activity.”

For skin care, the oil from Red Raspberry seeds is rich in Vitamin E (anti-aging), Omega-3 fatty acids (keeps skin moist and strong) and has an SPF of 25-50. They have unique antioxidants that provide powerful protection for the skin.

According to research from the Netherlands (published in BioFactors), raspberries possess three times the antioxidant activity of kiwis, ten times that of tomatoes, and 50% more than strawberries.

In addition to being rich in Vitamin B, C, folate, niacin, magnesium, potassium, and copper, there’s something else that impresses me about almighty Red Raspberry.  Red Raspberries actually have an almost-exclusive secret weapon: ellagitannins, a family of compounds that have anti-cancer activity.

  1. Yay! Raspberries are my FAV! Seriously love their little spongy texture and the tart follow. So happy they’re getting their day in the sun!

Also, just saw Alton Brown’s episode on freezing fruit. If at the very least, put them in the fridge (coated w/a special concoction) to let them cool down prior to placing them in the freezer. They freeze consistently and without the obnoxious enzymes breaking down the fruit into mush.
