Though the past few weeks may have been quiet on our blog, they most certainly were not quiet in our West Village spa and boutique. And behind all the madness, our mastermind and founder has been brewing up a whole new offering… and we want to share it out loud!

Introducing: The Om Aroma & Co. Bespoke Beauty Bar. The Beauty Bar, an idea that will come to fruition in the next few months, will bring a whole new element of personalization and customization here at Om Aroma, which, from the start, was built with the knowledge that each skin type is unique. Our Bespoke Beauty Bar is going to bring it to the next level: we’ll be custom-mixing serums with a bevy of new ingredients, all catered and customized to the customer’s skin type.

We hope, as Om customers, that you’ve come to use and love our Red Raspberry and Pumpkin serums, which have been featured in national magazines like Allure. Cool, crisp fall is fast approaching, which makes the warm flicker of a lit candle even more enticing. But when you settle down for the evening with your sweet, scented seasonal accessories, beware the various chemicals you may be welcoming into the air. Many traditional and commercial candles are made with paraffin— a petroleum-derived substance - and synthetic fragrances, all of which can leak carcinogenic toxins into the air as they burn.

Don’t fret. You can still enjoy calming, indulgent scented candles with peace of mind, so long as you opt for a better choice, such as soy. Soy-based candles are a far superior alternative to their paraffin nemeses; they are clean-burning, non-toxic and long-lasting. And biodegradable soy, unlike petroleum, is a renewable resource which grows relatively quickly, and safely, when genetic modification doesnt interfere.

Good: Saint Jude’s Charity

Om Aroma recently participated in the Inaugural Hope Blooms Gala on June 14, 2011 by donating a Mommy and Me Basket filled with Om Aroma products for both mother and child. The event was hosted by Dawn Gallagher, author of Nature’s Beauty Secrets.

Samples of our organic Caviar Eye Cream were also donated to the goodie bags that were handed to each participant at the end of the evening.

This noble gala was a charity event for the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, where all contributions were donated for the advancement in research and medical treatment conducted for catastrophic childhood diseases (mainly cancer). Since opening in 1962, St. Jude has treated children from all 50 states and more than 70 foreign countries. St. Jude is the only pediatric cancer research center where families never pay for treatments that are not covered by insure, and families without insurance are never asked to pay.

We are very proud to have been a part of such an amazing event.

Gorgeous: 5-Minute Anti-Stress Exercise

As someone who is trying to reduce stress in my life, I am on a mission to find ways to relax and enjoy life even with two businesses and a toddler who keeps me on my toes! After all, stress is the biggest aging culprit (just look at how our presidents age while in office), so I’m sharing an 5-minute anti-stress technique that you can use at home.

I spent years as a concert pianist studying relaxation in order to deal with the extreme stress of performing under pressure. I followed a program called, “Peak Performance - Mental Training Techniques of the World’s Greatest Athletes” by Charles Garfield, Ph.D. If the face was relaxed, I was more focused and able to handle stress with poise and composure.

I’ve trained our Om estheticians to help clients with this imaginary mask via a detailed facial massage in our Om Yoga Facial (Emotion Face Mapping), but you can do this exercise on your own when you need a dose of anti-stress love!

Adapted from Peak Performance by Charles A. Garfield, Ph.D.

Begin by breathing in, counting to 3 slowly. Hold for 3 seconds. Breathe gently out counting to 6 seconds. Repeat this 3 times before beginning and repeat throughout this exercise.

Imagine putting on an imaginary relaxation mask. Feel its gentle weight against your skin.

Begin with the tongue, which has 16 muscles. Gently let all 16 muscles relax, not forgetting the back of the tongue. When your tongue is completely relaxed, notice how it affects your neck. Breathe in, breathe out.

The muscles around your mouth and jaw slowly relax. With the imaginary mask in place, your cheek muscles feel heavy and completely relaxed. Your eyelids are closed, resting gently, your eyes softly aimed toward the tip of your nose. The muscles in your eyes are softened and relaxed.

All the facial muscles are now relaxed, and the frown lines and tension wrinkles are smoothed out.

For five minutes, focus on all the feelings of relaxation of this imaginary mask. Just enjoy these sensations, letting your face fully relax.

Repeat this exercise from two to four times.

We all love looking gorgeous on the outside, but what if you could also feel radiant on the inside?

Acknowledging the beauty within yourself means you feel splendid and gorgeous no matter what size pants you’re wearing or how the summer humidity is affecting your hair.

Try these simple steps to begin feeling your radiant inner beauty:

1. Speak kindly to yourself
Notice the voices inside your mind that judge or criticize you. Meet these voices with compassion and offer loving and kind words instead.

2. Appreciate your gifts
We all have gifts to offer the world, but sometimes we can’t see them for ourselves. Ask your close friends what gifts you offer that they appreciate.

3. Feed your spirit
Nourishing your spirit makes you feel beautiful from the inside out. What did you love to do as a kid? What have you been wanting to try, but haven’t done? Try a Reiki healing session, go dancing, or take a walk in nature.

In order to feel inner beauty, you have to feed your inner self.

(Not So) Gorgeous: Heat Rash

Hate those little pink bumps that pop up mostly on the chest, the neck, the back or the abdomen in response to the summer heat?

A quick fix to alleviate these little nuisances is to stand in front of an air conditioner or fan. The cold air will reduce the redness and will eventually help them disappear.

Another quick solution is cornstarch powder or a cool-water soak. Just remember, a heat rash is your body’s way of telling you to stay cool. Drink lots of cold fluids during these hot summer months to avoid over-heating, stay out of the sun, wear your Red Raspberry natural sun protection, and stay cool, baby.

Want to be eco-friendly but still look chic? Shop for recycled clothing! Buying recycled clothing makes you a good citizen of Earth by keeping our planet clean and keeping your wallet full.

Landfills throughout the world are packed with clothing items we discard throughout our lifetime. Most of our clothing is made from synthetic fibers (ahem, plastic) which takes at least a century to disintegrate.
